Consequences of increased homocysteine level
Proper concentration of homocysteine in blood should not exceed 10 umol/l. Higher values are called hyperhomocysteinemia.

Excessively high concentration of homocysteine leads to the creation of S-adenosylhomocysteine, a compound which lowers the number of cells of endothelium securing arterial vessels from the creation of atherosclerotic plaques. This phenomenon also causes the increase of blood pressure and the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Hyperhomocysteinemia and methylation problems lead to the disorders in the development of the fetus and problems with becoming pregnant as well as lower concentration of neurotransmitters, i.e. serotonin and dopamine, leading to the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases and cancers.  

Gene MTHFR
An increasingly common phenomenon is impairing MTHFR gene, which makes it impossible to properly utilize folic acid and vitamin B12 – the organism cannot transform these substances to the proper, bioavailable form, which results in the increased amount of toxins in the organism, DNA damage and increased risk of developing civilization diseases.
