THORNE Methyl-Guard Plus is a dietary supplement which contains 90 mg of sodium salt of riboflavin 5'-phosphate, 45 mg of pyridoxine 5'-phosphate, 3 mg of 5-MTHF, 3 mg of methylcobalamin and 1.8 g of anhydrous betaine per serving.

Riboflavin (riboflavin 5'-phosphate) – or else vitamin B2, is a cofactor for the MTHFR enzyme that converts folic acid into an active folate. It regulates the immune system functions and can improve the condition of skin and hair.

Pyridoxine (pyridoxine 5'-phosphate) – vitamin B6 is involved in numerous biochemical reactions, mainly in the metabolism of neurotransmitters. It can contribute to the breakdown of homocysteine and the prolactin reduction. It is involved in the production of hemoglobin and the metabolism of energetic substances. P5P is an active form that acts about five times stronger than the traditional HCl pyridoxine.

Folate (5-MTHF) – vitamin B9 in its biologically active form. It participates in the synthesis of DNA molecules and the production of red blood cells. It significantly affects the nervous system functions and participates in the metabolism of homocysteine.

Methylcobalamin – the active form of vitamin B12 with methyl group. It is a cofactor for the enzyme methionine synthase, which converts homocysteine in methionine. It has a wide impact on the functioning of the nervous system and the production of myelin sheath of neurons. It supports the production of red blood cells.

Anhydrous betaine (trimethylglycine) – supports the path of homocysteine methylation to methionine via the BHMT enzyme. It is the precursor to creatine.

Homocysteine is an important risk marker of cardiovascular diseases, more important than cholesterol levels. Its excess significantly increases the probability of atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction and stroke.

Methyl-Guard Plus contains a set of components that effectively reduce its level, by supporting different paths of its metabolism.

Vitamin B6 is required for the transsulfuration of homocysteine using the CBS enzyme, that is its conversion to cystathionine and then to taurine, glutathione and sulphates.

Folate and B12 contribute to the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine, which brings it back to cycle. The process not only reduces the amount of homocysteine but also allows for the increase in the efficiency of numerous other biochemical processes which require the presence of methyl groups.

Betaine, or TMG, also supports remethylation, but in a different way. It passes one methyl group that by the mean of the BHMT enzyme is connected to homocysteine and together they form methionine.

Methylation cycle

The cycle consists mainly of the conversion of folic acid and methionine, which attach to each other. A disorder of even one of these transformations results in a chain reaction which disturbs many other significant reactions. Methylation cycle disorders can lead to mood problems, depressive disorders, diseases of the nervous system and the circulatory system, low immunity and impaired fertility.

A trap with vitamin B12 and folic acid

In almost all dietary supplements on the Polish market which should contain B vitamins and in fortified foods we can find these compounds in forms of cyanocobalamin and pteroylmonoglutamic acid, which are synthetic forms of folic acid. These forms are not always effective. What is more, they can even be toxic!

The statistics show that a significant part of the population has the mutated variant of MTHFR gene (almost 50%), which is responsible for the transformation of folic acid into active folate. In this case, the consumption of synthetic forms not only will not increase the active folate, but will lead to the accumulation of folic acid in blood, whose excess can cause a lot of damage, including an increase in the likelihood of cancer.

B12 in the form of cyanocobalamin provides toxic cyanide, and its reduction requires vitamin B12. This makes the supplementation of vitamin B12 ineffective. But it's no wonder that manufacturers use this form of the vitamin because it is the cheapest one.

As you can see, it is not worth to expose yourself to health damages by taking inappropriate forms of vitamins. Methyl-Guard Plus contains only active and safe vitamin forms.

Influence on the mood

Vitamins contained in the Methyl-Guard Plus actively participate in the formation of numerous neurotransmitters responsible for the good mood, such as dopamine, serotonin or GABA. They do this either directly, by participating in the transformation of amino acids into neurotransmitters, and indirectly, by increasing the amount of SAMe and BH4, which are extremely important in this aspect.

THORNE Methyl-Guard Plus is recommended especially for people with high levels of homocysteine and MTHFR gene polymorphism. It is also worth to be considered by people complaining about low mood, low energy levels and bad results of red cell parameters.

Sodium is an important component of the intracellular fluids, and is a regulator of acid-base balance. Along with potassium affects the proper of growth and provides the proper functioning of muscles and nerves. The source of acquisition is table salt (NaCl) and bladderwrack, shellfish, bacon, beef, and of plant beets and carrots. People on salt-free diet should avoid, among others, spicy sauces and smoked meats and sausages.
Sodium deficiency is very rare, at heaving sweating after a long effort (e.g. in the marathon).
Excess sodium increases blood pressure (especially for the elderly), edema and increased thirst. Exceeding the daily dose of 14g a day can cause poisoning.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine) is soluble in the liquid. It participates in the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. By reducing the amount of fat in the blood do not enable deposition of the body. It helps the absorption of magnesium and vitamin B12 (cobalamin). It works on the muscle antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory pain in the joints. It acts anti. It provides efficient operation of the brain. It increases energy increasing vigor of a man. The demand for vitamin B6 increases during pregnancy and breast-feeding infants. The natural product is: yeast, eggs, wheat germ, meat (liver), wheat bran, nuts, peanuts peanuts, soybeans. There is a hypothesis that can be synthesized by intestinal bacteria.
Deficiency of vitamin B6 causes abnormal metabolism of proteins, decrease in lymphocytes in the blood, causes a feeling of lethargy and fatigue intensifies.
Dosage: 1.5-2.5 mg daily (increased demand during pregnancy and lactation).

Salt (sodium chloride, or table salt), natural source of electrolytes (chlorine and potassium), regulating water and electrolyte and acid-base balance of the body, affecting the nervous system and blood pressure. Sodium is an essential element for the proper growth. The proper dose of salt prevents overheating of the body and solar stroke. It provides the proper functioning of muscles and nerves the body. Chlorine in combination with sodium, is involved in the digestive process and maintains acid-base balance in the body, as antitoxin removes toxic products of metabolism in the liver. Salt is a flavour component and preservative of many foods, nutritional supplements and mixtures of electrolytes, available at

Dosage: no specific standards of consumption, used so as to provide sufficient amount of electrolytes to the body (sodium and chloride).

What is methylcobalamin?

Methylcobalamin is a biologically active form of vitamin B12. It is one of the two forms of this vitamin that may be used as cofactors in various reactions. It differs from popular cyanocobalamin in the presence of methyl group instead of cyanide, thanks to which it releases the organism from the need of neutralizing this harmful factor.

The methyl group from methylcobalamin may be transferred to homocysteine, thanks to which it comes back in the form of methionine in order to be further converted to SAMe, which is the main donor of methyl groups in our organism. These methyl groups may be then used in the processes of creatine production, in neurotransmitter metabolism and as DNA methylation, thanks to which we achieve proper energy level, better well-being and generally better condition of the organism. B12 is a coenzyme for three enzymes: isomerase, methyltransferase and dehalogenase.

Apart from the influence on the nervous system, the supply of vitamin B12 is also very important for the proper synthesis of red cells as well as hemoglobin and anemia prevention.

Methylcobalamin in mono-supplements and complex vitamin preparations may be found in the offer of

Betaine (N, N, N-trimethylglycine, the TMG) is methyl glycine derivative participating in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. It is present in food of plant origin and produced by the body in the liver or kidneys. The medicine uses it in the treatment of gastrointestinal and digestive disorders and hyperhomocysteinemia. In the supplements that increase the level of homocysteine used together with glycocyamine, indirectly influences the endogenous synthesis of creatine. There is no mono-preparation supplement containing betaine. Available in creatine stacks and the detoxicating supplements.

Glycine is belongs to 22 essential amino acids (synthesized within the body) constructing proteins, and non-protein component of enzymes i.e. heme. It is a inhibiting neurotransmitter allowing for improvement in sleep comfort even at a dose of 3 g at bedtime. Glycine (as arginine) is a precursor of creatine. It is essential for the synthesis of a strong antioxidant - removing free radicals out of the body - glutathione. It is cholagogic and cholepoiteic. By interfering with the synthesis of growth hormone, accelerates the biological recovery of an organism. Naturally present in foods of plant and animal origin. In the sports supplementation is a component creatine stacks, amino acid supplements, protein supplements based on natural ingredients and carbohydrate and protein.
