Garden of Life Raw B-Complex is a diet supplement containing group B vitamins, including vitamin B12 in its methylated form and folates; mixture of digestive enzymes, bacteria and probiotic yeast (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as well as vegetables and fruits originating form certified organic crops. This product is completely vegan.
Thiamine in the form of pyrophosphate (TPP) as a prosthetic enzyme group: pyruvate dehydrogenase, α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase and transketolase, takes an active part in citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle) which has an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates and fatty acids. That is why there is a bigger demand on vitamin B1 in high carbohydrate diet and why its deficiency leads to neurological disorders along with abnormal glucose concentration in the blood.
Riboflavin in the form of coenzymes: flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and flavin mononucleotide (FMN), is a part of flavin enzymes. In this way, vitamin B2 participates in the oxidation and reduction processes in the organism that condition the metabolism of nutrients and energy production.
Riboflavin interacts with vitamin A, so that proper function of mucous membranes and skin are maintained. The standard symptom of riboflavin deficiency is cracking lisp and corners of the mouth as well as mucositis. The more serious effects of deficiency are the development of anemia and the reduction of heme (blood pigment) production.
Niacin in the coenzyme form: NAD and NADP, takes part in hydrogen atoms transfer in numerous metabolic processes, among others, tissue respiration and glycolysis. Vitamin B3 is necessary for the health of the nervous system - it is used in i. a. the treatment of schizophrenia. Additionally, it has antioxidative properties, increasing the activity of glutathione reductase. As a result, niacin supports the inactivation and excretion of xenobiotics (some drugs and toxins are coupled with glutathione) from the organism.
Pyridoxine, a.k.a vitamin B6, in active, coenzymatic phosphate forms is involved in i. a. the transformation of amino acids - decarboxylation reactions, racemization and others. Pyridoxine, by being involved in the antibodies formation, has a strengthening effect on the organism’s resistance. It is necessary for the synthesis of porphyrins, present, among others, in hemoglobin, and its deficiency leads to the development of non-pigmented anemia. Faster aging of neurons is yet another effect of vitamin B6 deficiency.
Folates play a number of important functions in the organism. First of all, they are necessary for proper cell division, since they are transferring one-carbon fragments for the synthesis and methylation of RNA and DNA, therefore the proper level of folates in intensely dividing tissues is especially crucial. This holds true also for the developing fetus that is why, they should be obligatory supplemented by pregnant women and those who are planning pregnancy.
Folates participate in the transformation of amino acids, including homocysteine, leading to a decrease in its level. Lowering the homocysteine level is a desirable activity from the prevention of civilization diseases point of view, especially of the circulatory system. Folate deficiency contributes to abnormal cell division, development of anemia and depression.
Methylcobalamin is a bioactive form of vitamin B12, naturally occurring in the organism. Vitamin B12 is necessary for every cell of the body, since it participates in methylation reactions (like folates). With the cooperation of vitamin B12, homocysteine is remethylated to methionine. It is also crucial for the proper erythrocytes formation. Its deficiency leads to the development of megaloblastic anemia. Vitamin B12 has a significant importance from the health of the nervous system point of view, due to its contribution to the formation of myelin sheaths.
Biotin, also called vitamin B7, as a coenzyme is an essential element of some of the carboxylic acid enzymes, i. a. acetyl-CoA carboxylase and pyruvate carboxylase. Carboxylases are conditioning several important metabolic changes, including gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis.
Biotin has a beneficial effect on the appearance of the skin and hair. This effect is possible due to the presence of sulfur in the biotin molecule. Vitamin B7 supports the production processes of keratin, the proteins of which contain large amounts of sulfuric amino acids. Biotin is involved also in the processes of skin cell differentiation and building hair and nails. Biotin deficiency is manifested by skin inflammation, excessive brittleness of the hair and nails and disorders of fat metabolism.
Pantothenic acid in the form of coenzyme A (CoA) is necessary for the proper metabolism of fatty acids, synthesis of certain neurotransmitters and hormones. Vitamin B5 effectively supports the organism's antioxidative barrier - it leads to an increase in the glutathione level and, according to studies performed on an animal model, it can inhibit lipid peroxidation processes.
The mixture of organic vegetables and fruits provides a wealth of health-promoting phytochemicals - pofilenols, most of all flavonoids. Flavonoids are a group of compounds with scientifically proven antioxidative properties that strengthen the vascular endothelium, as well as anti-aggregating, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. They exhibit a synergy of action with vitamin C.
Bacteria and probiotic yeast - Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae support the normalization of intestinal bacterial microflora. They inhibit the colonization and survival of pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, beneficially influence the organism’s immunity and digestive comfort. Intestinal balance is also important from the reduction of mood disorders and depression point of view.
Digestive enzymes support the function of natural enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating and improving digestive processes. Properly digested food has a positive influence on the state of bacterial microflora and is easily absorbed by the organism. Taking digestive enzymes along with a meal will result in most benefits - protection against the feeling of heaviness and digestive discomfort. Digestive enzymes might also be helpful in alleviating food intolerances.
To sum up, Garden of Life Raw B-Complex is a complicated diet supplement recommended for complementing the diet with group B vitamins, especially for people leading active and stressful lifestyle and/or performing mental work, in order to improve the cognitive functions, as well as in the case of vegan diet as a health prophylaxis.
The preparation not only supplements B vitamin deficiencies, but it also makes it possible to increase the daily consumption of fruit and vegetables, which makes it perfect for people whose diet is poor in those products or calories. B vitamins are water-soluble, so they do not have to be taken with a meal. However, as the supplement also contains natural enzymes, taking it with a meal will improve its digestion.

What is methylcobalamin?
Methylcobalamin is a biologically active form of vitamin B12. It is one of the two forms of this vitamin that may be used as cofactors in various reactions. It differs from popular cyanocobalamin in the presence of methyl group instead of cyanide, thanks to which it releases the organism from the need of neutralizing this harmful factor.
The methyl group from methylcobalamin may be transferred to homocysteine, thanks to which it comes back in the form of methionine in order to be further converted to SAMe, which is the main donor of methyl groups in our organism. These methyl groups may be then used in the processes of creatine production, in neurotransmitter metabolism and as DNA methylation, thanks to which we achieve proper energy level, better well-being and generally better condition of the organism. B12 is a coenzyme for three enzymes: isomerase, methyltransferase and dehalogenase.
Apart from the influence on the nervous system, the supply of vitamin B12 is also very important for the proper synthesis of red cells as well as hemoglobin and anemia prevention.

A particular application of lipase-containing compounds is indicated as a supplement to the diet of people with high physical activity in the case of a heavy food consumption. The lipases are in the supplements enhancing digestion, available at www.muscle-zone.pl.
Protease (proteinase, peptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme. It is responsible for the hydrolysis of peptide bonds between amino acids in proteins. Protease is released as a biologically inactive proenzyme which is activated in the gastrointestinal lumen.
Protease is not a single compound. It is a large group of 500 various proteases. They can be classified by e.g. the pH in which they are active (acid, neutral and basic) and catalytic mechanisms (serine, threonine, cysteine, spartic and glutamic proteases and metalloproteases).
The role of proteases in human life is not only restricted to digestive processes. They are also involved in the process of growth, maturation and ageing of the body. They play a major function in the growth and spread of pathogenic microorganisms and that is why protease inhibitors are effective in the treatment of many diseases.
In supplementation, proteases are used most frequently to promote the digestion of protein products. They are added to preparations with digestive enzyme blends or protein-rich supplements. What is more, these enzymes are a popular ingredient of formulations for combating the biofilm, formed by pathogenic bacteria in the body.
Cellulase is an enzyme of the hydrolase class. It is responsible for catalysing the hydrolysis of β-1 4-glycosidic bonds between glucose molecules in cellulose (a building block for plant cell walls). This reaction leads to the formation of the disaccharide cellobiose which is converted into glucose.
The human body is not capable of synthesising cellulase. Because of that, dietary fibre is not digested and used as a source of energy. Nonetheless, it has a beneficial impact on health, is essential for maintaining normal digestive function and may prevent many diseases. Because of that, it must not be excluded from the diet.
In supplementation, cellulase is most frequently an ingredient of digestive enzyme blends. It can be also found in health-promoting supplements with vegetable and fruit extracts. It is recommended especially to persons who complain of digestive discomfort after consuming fibre-rich foods.
Bromelain - an enzyme from the group of proteases. The source is the pineapple (pineapple Fructus Sativa) and pineapple leaves, containing bromelain in a form of a mixture of enzymes similar to pepsin and papain responsible for the hydrolysis of peptide bonds of protein. Bromelain in the first place, in the sports supplementation, increases the digestibility of proteins, especially in the case of high-protein diets and has anti-inflammatory and anti-edema. This prevents overloading on the digestive system and diarrhoea.
It is a component of supplements for athletes and supplements supporting musculoskeletal system.
Phytase (myo-inositol hexaphosphate phosphohydrolase) is a phosphorolytic enzyme, which is a catalyst for the hydrolysis of phytic acid – a non-digestive, organic form of phosphorus that occurs in cereal grains and seeds of oil plants. The presence of this enzyme was found in plant organisms and in some animals, bacteria, and fungi. Human body does not produce phytase, however, the intestinal microflora of some people (especially vegetarians and vegans) have been proved to contain microbes capable of producing phytases.
Phytase promotes degradation of phytic acid, and thus increases the bioavailability of certain nutrients and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, and iron. In addition, it promotes better digestion and reduces the symptoms that may accompany the consumption of cereals and legumes. In supplementation, phytase does not occur in the form of a mono-preparation. Most often it is one of the components of mixtures containing various digestive enzymes.
Lactase (a digestive enzyme) is involved in the digestion of milk sugar (lactose) and improving its digestibility, artificially derived from yeast. In the supplementation it is a component of a nutritional composition containing protein from milk (casein, whey), carbohydrates, meal replacements type of MRP and as an additive in the complexes of the amino acids, available at www.muscle-zone.pl
Dosage: No standards for consumption
Papain – a digestive enzyme is obtained from the papaya fruit, causing an initial distribution of animal protein in the hydrolysis, increases the digestibility of amino acids, facilitates digestive processes, the impact on the gastric mucosa reduces the risk of peptic ulcer disease, according to in not fully unacknowledged studies it increases immunity. In the sports supplementation it is used in the composition of protein supplements, vitamin supplements and enzyme complexes available at www.muscle-zone.pl
Dosage: from a few dozen to several hundred mg / 24h
Peptidase is an enzyme catalysing the hydrolysis of peptide bonds. Depending on the site of action, it divides into endopeptidase, which breaks peptide bonds in the middle of a peptide chain, and exopeptidase, responsible for the cleavage of single amino acids from the end of a peptide chain. To put it simply, the enzyme helps digest protein.
Peptidase obtained by fermentation of the fungi Aspergillus oryzae is most commonly used in supplementation. It is recommended especially to individuals with high protein intake (athletes and persons on protein-rich diets).
Peptidase is usually found in complex blends of digestive enzymes. It is also an ingredient of some protein supplements available at www.muscle-zone.pl.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus – what is it?
Lactobacillus bulgaricus (known before as Lactobacillus delbrueckii) is a Gram-positive bacteria species, able to convert lactose into lactic acid. It is non-motile and does not form spores. It is present in digestive system of mammals and fermented products. It is one of the bacteria used for yoghurt fermentation. It was first identified in 1905 by the Bulgarian doctor Stamen Grigorov.
It is classified as a probiotic, so that it has positive influence on the human body system, i.a. by supporting the fight against pathogenic bacteria and promoting restoration of homeostasis after microbiome disorders. It can be also potentially beneficial for the functioning of the immune system. It is helpful in fight against diarrhoea caused by antibiotics and can improve digestion and absorption of nutrients. There are some indications that it can improve condition of people suffering from bowels inflammations.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus contained in many complex probiotic preparations which can be found in the offer of muscle-zone.pl
What is Lactobacillus plantarum?
Lactobacillus plantarum is a strain of gram-positive, motionless, rod-shaped bacteria which ferment milk in the intestinal environment. These probotic strains are believed to be the most resistant to adverse conditions prevailing in different sections of the digestive tract. Apart from the small intestine, they were detected in the oral cavity and even vagina where they compete with pathogenic microorganisms, protecting the body from bacterial infections, viruses and mycoses.
They affect the vitality of pathogens and synthesis of compounds beneficial to the health of, e.g. lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids. As a result, it normalises intestinal function, thereby ensuring proper digestion and nutrient absorption. By using the lactase enzyme, it has the ability to break down milk sugar which is the cause of many unpleasant digestive ailments in the majority of adults.
It is used in medicine for treating irritable bowel syndrome, problems with digestion and Crohn’s disease. It is used in supplementation as one of the components of complex probiotics available at www.muscle-zone.pl
Saccharomyces cerevisiae – yeasts from the group of monocellular fungi, commonly used by the researchers as test material, because of its small environment requirements. They are also popular in food industry.
The yeasts show health-promoting properties and are a good substitute for offal in vegetarian diet. They are a good source for vitamins, particularly B-vitamins. They have also positive influence on the condition of bacterial microflora, as they improve the functioning of intestinal barrier.
In dietary supplements and drugs, they are used mainly as a support for the functioning of the digestive system. They are also present in products improving the quality of skin, hair and nails, however the newest research suggests that the influence on these tissues results from the influence on the microbiota.
