Active Folate Active Folate

Seeking Health Active Folate is a dietary supplement with two active forms of folates characterised by direct bioavailability – Quatrefolic® L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate   and calcium folinate in the dose of 800 mcg per capsule.

Folates are a natural form of vitamin B9. They are found mainly in greens, broccoli, asparagus, avocado and whole grains. Adequate folate levels in the body prevent the incidence of hyperhomocysteinaemia, impaired synthesis of purines and pyrimidine as well as abnormal DNA methylation.

Normal metabolism of folates reduces the incidence of cardiovascular and neurological disorders. In the case of pregnant women, it decreases also the risk of such complications as miscarriage, macrosomia, birth defects and impaired mental development in children.

Unfortunately, natural folates in food are characterised by low stability and are broken down under the influence of many factors, e.g. light, temperature, heat treatment and oxygen.

What is the difference between L-5-MTHF, folinic acid and folic acid?
Folic acid is a synthetic form. This compound is gradually reduced in the intestinal epithelium in the initial stage into dihydrofolate (DHF) and then into L-stereoisomer of tetrahydrofolate (THF). In next reactions with the activity of proper enzymes, this compound is converted into L-5-MTHF, which is the most reduced form.

L-5-MTHF (L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate) is a basic active form of reduced folates in serum. L-5-MTHF is involved actively in metabolic processes of folates and its activity is comparable to or even higher than folic acid. L-5-MTHF supplementation increases effectively folate levels in serum and erythrocytes and may be useful for both women planning pregnancy and pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Unlike folic acid, this form does not undergo reduction reactions in the presence of the enzyme DHFR and MTHFR before cellular metabolic processes of folates. The omission of these processes helps use the compound quickly and directly in cellular processes. Because of that, L-5-MTHF supplementation is helpful especially in genetically determined low activity of DHFR and MTHFR.

Like L-5-MTHF, folinic acid is one of the most active forms of folates and does not require enzymatic conversion. It is used mainly for reducing toxic activity of antagonists of folic acid. This substance is stable after isolation and is often used as a substitute for folic acid.

Folate deficiencies
Folate deficiencies are caused by, among other things, drinking too much alcohol, contraceptives and diet poor in leafy vegetables. This contributes to inhibiting regeneration and growth of cells in the body, chronic fatigue, problems with concentration and memory, anaemia, digestive disorders, insomnia and also states of anxiety.

Folate deficiencies in pregnancy may lead to defects of the central nervous system and placenta and abnormal development of brain functions. It may also cause miscarriages, preterm births and low birth weight in newborns.

Folates in pregnancy
Folates affect neuronal growth and proliferation and are also involved in the production of neurotransmitters – dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline and serotonin. Consequently, they are responsible for healthy functioning of the nervous system. It has been shown that inadequate folate intake during pregnancy contributes significantly to an increased incidence of neuropsychological disorders in children.

One of the worst consequences of folate deficiency is neural tube defects which affect more and more children. It is estimated that 1-2 cases of this disease are in every 1000 births. Inborn neural tube defects contribute to stopping the development of the brain and spinal cord which leads to anencephaly, spina bifida and encephalocele.

According to the latest studies, taking traditional folic acid may be not enough to prevent foetal neural tube defects. It is believed that every second woman may have impaired metabolism of folic acid. This may lead thus to malabsorption in the body and consequently an increased risk of foetal disorders.

Forms in this preparation do not require additional metabolism and can be used immediately by the body and that is why they are recommended to pregnant women.

Folates and methhylation
Methylation consists in the transfer of methyl group –CH3 between molecules and consequently addition of the group to an enzyme responsible for a particular biological function. Proper methylation reactions are necessary for, among other things, body detox, cellular growth and regeneration, formation of immune cells, DNA synthesis and healthy functioning of the nervous system.

It is assumed that problems with methylation, especially associated with the mutation of MTHFR may affect every second person. As a consequence, they may lead primarily to increasing levels of homocysteine which contributes to promoting inflammation and development of cardiovascular diseases, impaired synthesis of neurotransmitters and abnormal detoxification processes in the body.

Active forms of folates in the formula help avoid elaborated and often problematic metabolism, which ensures high bioavailability and maximum utilization in the body. They can be safely taken by individuals with a defective MTHFR gene in whom the supplementation with a traditional folic acid may cause many health problems.

To sum up, Seeking Health Active Folate is a dietary supplement which can be a safe and effective alternative for folic acid. The formula will work for individuals with MTHFR mutation and pregnant women. Due to high bioavailability and absorption it will perfectly make up deficiencies caused by inadequate nutrition.

Quatrefolic

Information

Quatrefolic is the glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate and also an active form of folic acid. It is an innovative nutrient (fourth generation folate) which is well soluble in water and thus absorbed effectively by the body. As an organic compound ranked among B vitamins, it is necessary for normal functioning at the cellular level.

Adding folates to a diet is recommended especially to pregnant and lactating women. These compounds may contribute to healthy foetal development. According to studies, their intake may reduce the incidence of pregnancy complications.

Some sources report that folate supplementation supports cardiovascular function (blood production) and contribute to healthy immune function.

Quatrefolic may affect the metabolism of homocysteine whose levels increase in the body over time. Adding it to a diet may thus prevent the development of dementia and maintain healthy cognitive functions which is vital to adults, especially the elderly.

Salt

Information

Salt (sodium chloride, or table salt), natural source of electrolytes (chlorine and potassium), regulating water and electrolyte and acid-base balance of the body, affecting the nervous system and blood pressure. Sodium is an essential element for the proper growth. The proper dose of salt prevents overheating of the body and solar stroke. It provides the proper functioning of muscles and nerves the body. Chlorine in combination with sodium, is involved in the digestive process and maintains acid-base balance in the body, as antitoxin removes toxic products of metabolism in the liver. Salt is a flavour component and preservative of many foods, nutritional supplements and mixtures of electrolytes, available at www.muscle-zone.pl

Dosage: no specific standards of consumption, used so as to provide sufficient amount of electrolytes to the body (sodium and chloride).

Calcium folinate

Information

Calcium folinate - a metabolite of tetrahydrofolic acid constituting a perfect form of its supplementation. Tetrahydrofolic acid is a biologically active form of folic acid, especially recommended to people dealing with methylation disorders. Folic acid in the active form is at the same time a promotor of this process, but it requires efficient action for its activation, therefore in case of methylation disorders, folates are the only effective form of supplementation of this compound.

Folic acid is mainly associated with pregnancy. In its active form, it is responsible for the regulation of the development of the neural tube of the fetus, which constitutes a key factor, conditioning its proper development. Providing folates is currently indicated as the most effective form of healthy pregnancy prophylaxis.

Another important aspect of the functionality of tetrahydrofolic acid in the organism is its role in the process of methylation. It positively influences the efficiency of transformations of homocysteine to methionine, thanks to which it demonstrates positive influence on the health of the cardiovascular system. The efficiency of this process is also conducive to maintaining the high concentration of S-adenosyl methionine in the organism. This compound demonstrates special influence on maintaining optimal mental functions and healthy liver.
