Vitamin B12 (cobalamine) – an essential dietary component, one of the B group vitamins, that is a water-soluble substrates for coenzymes – essential parts of enzymes determining the proper management of biochemical reactions in the organism. This compound occurs in several forms, the most common and stable being cyanocobalamine.
Effect of B12 on erythrocytes and anaemia:
Vitamin B12’s function is regulating the production of red blood cells; to be more exact, it is a hematopoietic factor which determines the normal process of erythropoiesis, that is the process of producing and differentiating erythrocytes from stem cells in bone marrow. The deficiency of this vitamin results in anaemia. Appropriate supplementation restores the normal level of erythrocytes in the blood, which is necessary to keep the appropriate oxygen efficiency in athletes.
The effect of B12 on the level of homocysteine:
Vitamin B12 determines the normal process of the reaction of methylation in the organism, where it functions as a coenzyme. One of such reactions is methylation of homocysteine (Hcy) to methionine, catalysed by an enzyme called methionine synthase. Its importance lies in that the process reduces the level of homocysteine in the system – the substance responsible for the risk of developing atherosclerotic and thrombotic changes, stroke and cardiac arrest.
Research has shown that ca. 30% of Polish adults has an abnormally high level of homocysteine in the blood – hyperhomocysteinaemia. The most common reason for it is the deficiency of vitamin B12, B6 and folic acid. Appropriate administration of these vitamins reduces the level of harmful homocysteine which, in turn, protects the circulatory system from complications.
Other functions of B12
- it conditions the normal process of energy management
- it takes part in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism
- it enables the synthesis of nucleic acid in cells
- it influences the functioning of the nervous system
- it takes part in creating the neurolemma which protects nerve cells
- it takes part in the production of neurotransmitters
- it ensures general well-being and mental balance
- it helps with learning and focusing
- it reduces the level of lipids in the blood
- has an effect on the skeletal system and stimulates appetite
To sum up, Swanson Vitamin B-12 is an extraordinarily useful dietary supplement, especially nowadays. It is intended as a B12 deficiency supplement for everyone. In athletes it may increase oxygen efficiency, as it increases the level of erythrocytes in the blood. It is particularly recommended for people who have problems with the circulatory or nervous system. It effectively prevents anaemia, particularly well when used together with iron, vitamin C, B6 and folic acid.
People on vegetarian diet or elderly people are often prone to vitamin B12 deficits, therefore in case of these people it is especially recommended to supplement this vitamin. Moreover, increased demand for vitamin B12 may be observed among people with intestinal disorders, the presence of parasites in the organism, in case of Castle’s factor deficit and increased production of hydrochloric acid. Vitamin B12 supplementation should amount to around 1 mg. One capsule a day will be sufficient if we use it with the aim of general health prophylaxis. However, in case of slight deficits of vitamin B12 and increased risk of these deficits, the dose should be increased to 2 capsules a day.

What is cyanocobalamin?
Cyanocobalamin is a basic, the most commonly met form of vitamin B12 in vitamin B complexes and multivitamins available on the market.
Vitamin B12 is the most known for its influence on neurology. It takes part in building and regenerating myelin sheaths of neurons, thanks to which it contributes to the protection of the nervous system against damages. Because of the ability to increase the level of S-Adenosyl methionine, vitamin B12 may contribute to more efficient synthesis of many neurotransmitters, thanks to which it positively influences well-being and psychical condition.
This vitamin is also engaged in the process of blood production and its deficiencies contribute to the creation of megaloblastic anemia. Its deficits may also concern vegetarians and vegans, elderly people, people with absorption disorders and those using drugs neutralizing gastric acid.
Cyanocobalamin is included in the composition of many complex vitamin supplements that may be found in the offer of muscle-zone.pl.
