Folic Acid Folic Acid

Olimp Labs Folic Acid is a dietary supplement containing 400 µg of folic acid – the dosage complies with the recommendations by the Expert Panel of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Poland. Maintaining proper folate levels is essential for a normal pregnancy and birth defect prevention.

Folic acid (vitamin B9) is an organic compound formed from pteridine, para-aminobenzoic acid, and the rest of glutamic acid. Folic acid is the most chemically stable folate donor. It is converted in the organism to 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate, and then to the active form of folate – levomefolic acid (5-MTHF). The compound exhibits a wide range of effects on the organism and is crucial for its normal functioning.

The active form of folates is a cofactor of the enzymes that synthesise compounds essential for cells, like the DNA and RNA. That is why the right supply of folates is particularly important for intensively multiplying tissues, for example foetal tissues or bone marrow. Moreover, folates provide single-carbon groups essential for the synthesis and biochemical transformations of such substances as adrenaline, noradrenaline, or thyroxine. It also participates in the production of neurolemmas, which protect nerve fibres.

Folic acid supplementation is recommended above all for pregnant women, who are particularly susceptible to deficiencies of the compound. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that folic acid supplemented before conception and during pregnancy prevents embryogenesis disorders – particularly when it comes to neural tube disorders. Neural tube disorders manifest themselves through, for example, anencephaly or myelomeningocele. Moreover, folate deficiencies can reduce the foetus’s body mass, cause pregnancy problems, and increase the risk of miscarriage.

The active form of folic acid leads to a decrease in homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid that constitutes an independent risk factor in the development of cardiovascular system diseases. By stimulating lipid peroxidation and damaging blood vessels, high homocysteine levels can lead to the development of atherosclerosis or a stroke. Levomefolic acid along with vitamins B6 and B12 participates in homocysteine metabolism, leading to a decrease in its levels in blood by its remethylation to methionine and transsulfuration to cystathionine.

Folic acid prevents the development of megaloblastic anaemia. Its participation in the synthesis of nucleic acids (DNA components) makes folic acid indispensable in normal erythrocyte production. Folic acid deficiency leads to the formation of megalocytes, that is erythrocytes with a distorted structure and function. Megalocytes have a greater size and shorter lifespan. That leads to the development of leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Because of their increased demand for folic acid, pregnant women are particularly susceptible to the development of megaloblastic anaemia.

To sum up, Olimp Labs Folic Acid is a dietary supplement recommended for increasing folate levels in the diet, particularly for future mums, those who use oral contraceptives, drink alcohol, or want to prevent cardiovascular system diseases.

Folic acid

Information

Folic acid - also known as vitamin B9, is a synthetic form of naturally occurring folates. It needs to be transformed to folates in order to be biologically active also in the human organism. Therefore, its supplementation is recommended to people who do not have problems with methylation processes.

The majority of people associate folic acid with the period of pregnancy. It is definitely a justified association. Proper supply of vitamin B9 conditions correct development of the fetus and prevents disorders of neural tube defects in a baby.

Supplementation with folic acid also demonstrates positive influence on the functions of the nervous system of adults. Some sources say that it is conducive to maintaining beneficial emotional states. Moreover, folic acid takes part in the process of erythropoiesis, thanks to which it enables efficient production of red cells.

Supplementation with folic acid should be also considered by men who deal with low sperm quality. It was proven that complementing the level of vitamin B9 is conducive to increasing reproductive abilities of men.
