Potassium Plus Iodine is a dietary supplement containing an optimal dose of two macroelements – potassium and potassium iodide. The preparation supports thyroid work and by its diuretic effect, it also contributes to maintaining proper water balance in the organism.
Potassium iodide (potassium salt of hydroiodic acid with the chemical formula KI) – is a stable salt of unreactive iodine. In fact, iodine appears in two forms: radical, elemental and in the form of potassium iodide, containing around 76% of iodine. Potassium iodide has a ion structure, composed of cation K and anion I. Under the influence of chemical reactions taking place in the organism, iodine and potassium are created out of it. Potassium iodide is characterized by the highest bioavailability – it absorbs in the digestive system along the whole length of intestines, is fast-absorbing and as quickly as after 2 hours after the intake it finds its way to the extracellular structure.
Iodine is essential for proper thyroid work. Many functions of the whole system depend on the efficiency of this gland – it regulates metabolism, the organism’s growth and development, energy production, it even influences mental well-being.
As much as 60% of iodine appearing in the organism is stored in thyroid follicular cells and is used to synthesize two most important hormones produced by thyroid – T3 and T4. Without the proper amount of iodine, thyroid is not able to produce the essential amount of these hormones. Moreover, thyroid devoid of iodine often unnaturally enlarges its sizes (the so-called goiters) and lumps appear on it, which also impair the work of the gland.
Iodine is a strong antioxidant – it fights free radicals, responsible for the development of civilization diseases, protects the organism from oxidative stress and chronic inflammations. It also improves the functioning of the immune system. It strengthens immunological response of the organism, destroys bacteria, fungi and viruses.
Iodine may be helpful in the process of losing weight. It facilitates thyroid work, thanks to which in a natural way it improves metabolism and prevents body mass growth, caused by the dysfunctions of this gland’s work. Iodine is also a component of diiodotyrosine – amino acid that comes into being during the synthesis of the hormones T3 and T4. Diiodotyrosine is responsible for the processes of protein synthesis, accelerates metabolic changes and conditions fatty tissue burning. Proper iodine level in the organism is crucial for the efficient course of these processes.
Potassium iodide facilitates the process of organism’s detoxification. It helps to remove harmful heavy metals (e.g. mercury), binds toxic fluorides, chlorides and bromides. It also demonstrates diuretic effect, which accelerates the process of toxins elimination from the organism and helps to maintain proper water balance in the organism.
Potassium (K) is a basic component of intracellular fluid. It is mainly responsible for maintaining the balance of liquid concentration in the organism. It also plays a role of a cofactor for many enzymes, takes part in nerve impulses transmission, initiates the contraction of heart muscle and stabilized the rhythm of heart beats as well as normalizes blood pressure.
Potassium is a sodium antagonist – its work is focused on regulating sodium level that may be let in cells. Excessively high level of sodium in cells leads to liquid retention and causes cell damages as a result of swelling. Potassium prevents these phenomena and contributes to removing the excess of liquids from the organism. The ability of potassium to reduce water retention in the organism helps to maintain proper blood pressure.
Potassium regulates the functions of muscle and nerve systems. Along with magnesium and calcium it affects neurotransmitters which are responsible for proper nerve transmission. It initiates nerve impulses, conditioning muscle contractions, including heart muscle. It regulates heart rate and influences the processes of pumping blood. Potassium is essential to transform glucose into glycogen and stimulates glycogen storage in muscles. Muscle weakness, increased muscle fatigability and their worse efficiency may be caused by potassium deficit.
Potassium + Iodine is a universal preparation which is a natural source of well-assimilable potassium and iodine. It effectively evens the level of macroelements in the organism, prevents water retention, supports the work of the nervous and muscle systems. Additionally, it improves thyroid functions, which is reflected in the improvement of the condition of the whole organism.
It is believed that the amounts of iodine and potassium are recently declining in our diets. Iodine is essential for the proper synthesis of thyroid hormones which are responsible for the proper functioning of the whole body system. Potassium is responsible for the proper muscle functions, concentration and the ability to focus attention as well as it participates in the maintenance of the balanced water-electrolyte management in the body system. The supplementation is then essential in the periods of intensive physical and mental work, infections with diarrhoea and in case of thyroid gland dysfunctions.
What is interesting, more and more people are using Himalayan salt. However, it turns out that this salt is not a good source of iodine, as it is in case of the “common” salt, which can contribute to the increased risk of deficiencies.

Iodine - more than two-thirds of iodine is stored in the thyroid gland and it is a component produced by it hormones - thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which are essential in the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and minerals and regulating the processes of growth, causing it usefulness in sports supplementation. It is also the ingredient of weight loss products. Regulates and controls body temperature. Natural source of acquisition of iodine are: bladderwrack, seafood, sea fish and onion and vegetables growing in soil containing this element and most of all iodized salt ..
Deficiency of iodine in the body cause hypothyroidism, and consequently overweight, mental slowing (cretinism inclusive). It is the cause of a goitre. Iodine deficiency can be caused by rhodanates and polyphenols (e.g. contained in cabbage and cauliflower), hemagglutinin found in legumes.
Excess iodine can result in inhibition of thyroid hormone synthesis (this happens in a small percentage of cases).
Dosage: Treatment of iodine should be done under medical supervision. Daily demand for adults is 150 mcg. For pregnant women daily demand increases to 175 mcg.
Potassium and sodium regulate the body's water resources, ensuring normal heart rhythm. Maintaining the proper level of potassium provides the proper oxidation of the brain, lowers blood pressure, increases the permeability of cell membranes (as an antagonist of calcium). It is a base-forming element. It is widely used in sports diet before and after training in the form of supplements, nutrients, vitamin-mineral preparations and minerals, concentrates and ready, isotonic and hypertonic beverages. Natural sources of acquisition of potassium are: vegetable products (bananas, citrus fruits, melons, mint leaves, green vegetables, potatoes) and animal products (sea fish, meat). Potassium is present in the form of organic compounds: citric acids, and fumarates gluconates and inorganic (chlorides, sulfates, oxides and carbonates).
Potassium deficiency (hypokalemia): excessive tiredness, headaches and irritability, problems with sleeping, muscle cramps, constipation. Potassium levels may drop sharply in the event of a reduction in blood sugar levels, prolonged starvation, severe diarrhea. They can occur when too much of strong coffee is consumed, with alcohol abuse and when eating too much sweets.
The excess of potassium (hyperkalemia) is often the cause of depression, hypotension, tingling in the extremities.
Sodium is an important component of the intracellular fluids, and is a regulator of acid-base balance. Along with potassium affects the proper of growth and provides the proper functioning of muscles and nerves. The source of acquisition is table salt (NaCl) and bladderwrack, shellfish, bacon, beef, and of plant beets and carrots. People on salt-free diet should avoid, among others, spicy sauces and smoked meats and sausages.
Sodium deficiency is very rare, at heaving sweating after a long effort (e.g. in the marathon).
Excess sodium increases blood pressure (especially for the elderly), edema and increased thirst. Exceeding the daily dose of 14g a day can cause poisoning.
Chlorine (chemical element from the group of halogens) - in the natural form of gas it is poisonous and water-soluble (until recently used as a disinfectant in the water supply system, now replaced by fluorination). It is chemically active element. It is used in the form of sodium chloride (NaCl) and potassium (KCl). It participates in the process of digestion and maintains acid-base balance in the body, removes toxic products of metabolism in the liver (antitoxin). Natural source of chlorine for the body is salt and bladderwrack.
Chlorine deficiency can occur due to excessive sweating, vomiting, causing digestive tract problems. It also causes loss of hair and teeth.
Excess chlorine, for example. Drink excessive amounts of chlorinated water, destroys bacterial flora and vitamin E.
Dosage: Daily dose should not exceed 15 grams.
