Niacin – also called vitamin B3 or PP, a common name for a group chemical compounds, demonstrating biologically similar effects, to which we classify: nicotinic acid, its amide form – nicotinamide and recently discovered nicotinamide riboside. Among the most characteristic features there are good solubility in water and alcohol and generally high resistance to high temperature, in comparison to other vitamins, reaction fluctuations or light. It was synthesized for the first time in 1867, however, as late as in the XX century its beneficial properties were noticed. In the human organism the most reactive form is nicotinic acid, which for higher safety circulates in the organism in the form of active amide, of which tissues more willingly take advantage in numerous transformations. When needed, nicotinic acid is restored to the form of amide in the process catalyzed by deamidase of intestinal microflora or liver. In biochemical reactions, niacin is used mainly as a substrate for the synthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and its phosphorylated form nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+), coenzymes having considerable influence on the multitude of processes in the organism. Direct influence on appropriate molecules, including nicotinic acid receptors, also has influence on the organism. The main food products rich in niacin are: yeasts, meat, especially white meat, milk, eggs, fish, whole seeds, red pepper, green vegetables and tea. When needed, the human organism demonstrates the ability of endogenous synthesis of niacin from tryptophan, where by using 60 mg of a given amino acid, it is able to produce 1 mg of a desired vitamin. The dose of niacin obtained from food, essential to maintain continuity of biochemical processes in the organism are the values between 15-20 mg.

Properties of niacin
Required for anabolic and catabolic processes
By constituting a precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), it ensures the organism the ability to perform many catabolic processes, including those of carbohydrates, proteins or fats. Being essential in the production of the phosphorylated form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADP+), it is engaged in the occurrence of anabolic processes, mainly regarding lipids. By promoting the release of the growth hormones, it supports the development of many structures, mainly protein.

Increases the capacity of antioxidant barrier of the organism
Thanks to NADPH accompanying the activity of glutathione reductase (GSH), it supports regeneration of glutathione and its transformation to the reduced form, as a result of which the aggressiveness of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the organism is lower. Niacin deficiency
Long-lasting deficiency of niacin in a diet may lead to the occurrence of skin changes, such as: dryness and redness in the places exposed to sunrays and injuries, blisters and ulcers or skin discolorations; it also results in the worse quality of mucosa of the digestive system and its general functionality and deepening of inflammations in the nervous system as well as disorders in psychological balance. An extreme consequence of niacin deficiency is pellagra, a disease, which combines all the above symptoms, for the first time described in 1735, which was caused in that time by very low supply of meat in a diet and large consumption of easily available corn, poor in tryptophan.

Supplemented forms of niacin
The two simplest supplemented forms of niacin are nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, which is an amide form of nicotinic acid. The majority of properties identified with niacin are demonstrated by nicotinic acid, characterized by fast absorption and immediate release and effect. However, it causes some symptoms in the form of redness and hot flashes, called the “flush” effect, which may be troublesome for people taking this form of the vitamin. There is a possibility to decrease the inconveniences by using a form with prolonged or long-lasting release, although these forms should be taken with caution, as they are considered harmful for the liver. Nicotinamide, in turn, does not lead to the creation of the above mentioned effect and presents a bit modified properties attributed to niacin, when it comes to strength, including lower effectiveness in reducing cholesterol and triglycerides.

A perfect compromise between the strength of properties and toning the “flush” effect seems to be inositol hexanicotinate (IHN), which is the combination of inositol creating a scaffolding of the compound with six niacin molecules, combined with carboxyl bonds. This form is characterized by high level of bioavailability and lack of the “flush” effect after application. Admittedly, it does not seem to be so effective in optimizing lipid profile as nicotinic acid, however, it works well in facilitating the functioning of the circulatory system, which is reflected in the improvement of vessel expandability and blood stickiness as well as support of oxygen transport. Inositol molecule incorporated in this chemical compound ensures additional beneficial effects.

Inositol – also known as cyclohexane-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexol, a chemical compound from the group of polyols, a molecule structurally similar to glucose. Due to important properties for the human organism, it is called vitamin B8, although, from the nutritional point of view it is considered a pseudo-vitamin. It has nine isomers, among which the most popular is active myo-inositol. Vitamin B3


Vitamin B3 (vitamin PP, niacin, nicotinic acid, nicotinamide) is niacinamide niacin. It is used in interaction with vitamins B1, B2 and B6 in the synthesis of hormones during lactation.
