Pantothenic acid - an organic chemical compound, very common in fauna and flora (in Greek, the word pantothen means "from everywhere" - the acid is literally ubiquitous). It is necessary for every living cell but it is not frequently found in nature by itself. It is a water-soluble vitamin, boiling inactivates only a small amount present in food.

Its role in the organism:
It is a component of coenzyme A (CoA) which takes part in generating energy from food, participates in the synthesis of vitamin D, cholesterol, fatty acids, erythrocytes (haem), several hormones and neurotransmitters. It is also active in regenerating skin cells and mucous membranes. It takes part in producing antibodies. It is also believed that pantothenic acid delays aging processes in the organism, prevents hair greying, restores its natural colour, reduces stress and constipations.

Deficiency consequences
Pantothenic acid is commonly present in most food products and it is additionally synthesised by microorganisms living in our gastrointestinal tracts. In studies with volunteers, they were given strongly modified food without pantothenic acid and the acid was removed from their organisms by the means of special agents. Dangerous symptoms of avitaminosis were observed as soon as after 6-9 months.

Direct consequences of the deficiency might be: disorders of the cardiovascular system, increased heart rate, skin lesions, fatigue, sleep disorders, excessive irritability, anxiety, headaches, nausea, impaired wound healing, sensory disturbances in arms and legs, burning feet syndrome, coordination problems, disorders of the digestive system, e.g. indigestion.

People whose diet is based mainly on boiled and canned food, fries, white bread, pizza, pasta and, on top of that, a lot of sugar and sweets are a group of high risk when it comes to vitamin B5 deficiency.

What is the daily requirement of vitamin B5?
The recommended intake of vitamin B5 for an adult is around 5-6 mg. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, smokers, alcoholics, malnourished people, patients with a chronic wasting disease, people under chronic stress and excessive physical effort, particularly those who do high-level competitive sports - those groups require a higher intake of vitamin B5.
