Swanson Vitamin D-3 is a dietary supplement with a wide range of effects, containing vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). The preparation efficiently supplements every diet, helps to keep teeth and bones healthy, increases the strength of skeletal muscles, strengthens the immune system, and exhibits neuroprotective and anticancer properties.

Vitamin D, referred to as a prohormone or a cytokine more and more often, is a fat-soluble vitamin whose new properties are still being discovered. Factors responsible for vitamin D deficiencies in the organism are, for example, insufficient synthesis in the skin, distorted biochemical transformations that convert vitamin D into its active form, or insufficient supply of the substance with food. The amount of vitamin D synthesised in the skin depends on latitude, the amount of sunlight reaching the skin, the concentration of melatonin in the skin, age, as well as the use of sunscreens.

Hormone-like activity
The structure of vitamin D is similar to that of steroid hormones; therefore, it is believed to exhibit hormone-like activity. It affects target cells through nuclear vitamin D receptors (VDR), which are present not only in bone cells, renal tubule cells, or intestinal epithelium cells, but also all other cells of the human organism (for example in the heart, the brain, blood vessel walls, the prostate, the small intestine). As VDRs are located in so many cell types, vitamin D is believed to have pleiotropic properties.

Regulation of calcium and phosphorus management
One of the best-known functions of vitamin D is its beneficial effect on the skeletal system. By participating in managing calcium and phosphorus, the vitamin helps to maintain normal bone mineral density, activates osteoblasts, and ensures the normal functioning of the nervous system. That happens through, for example stimulated synthesis of the protein that binds calcium, which translates into increased calcium absorption in the bowel, stimulated calcium reabsorption in renal tubules, and regulation of phosphorus absorption.

Increased strength of skeletal muscles
The right concentration of calcium is beneficial not only for the skeletal system, but also for the muscular system. Vitamin D helps to activate many metabolic processes that take place in muscle tissue. The vitamin stimulates protein synthesis, so it participates in muscle contractions and helps to increase the number of muscle cells, which, in turn, affects muscle strength and speed.

Moreover, vitamin D affects muscle cell proliferation, their differentiation, and apoptosis inhibition, and its deficiency can significantly contribute to the decrease in physical capacity and the functioning of antigravity muscles, which are responsible for maintaining positions of the body (for example quadratus femoris or calf muscle). Vitamin D enhances functional capacity, reduces the risk of falls, and accelerates the regeneration of fractures.

Healthy respiratory system
Vitamin D has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the respiratory system. That is connected mainly with its function in the immune system. The vitamin directly participates in cathelicidin and defensin production – components referred to as natural antibiotics.

Vitamin D helps to modulate the immune response also by regulating lymphocyte T functions and IL-10 production, which can have a beneficial effect on the therapeutic response among patients who take glucocorticoids in steroid-resistant asthma. Apart from that, vitamin D prevents infections of the nervous system, which can be of significance in the case of cystic fibrosis.

Vitamin D

Information

Vitamin D belongs to fat soluble vitamins, occurs in three forms: calciferol (vitamin D1) ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), it is formed under the action of sunlight for at least 15 minutes per day. In the absence of sunlight it should be administered in the diet in the form of fish oil (Vitamin A + D3) and fish oils. It is responsible for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. It is the building substance of bone tissue particularly necessary during pregnancy, childhood, and for athletes. It is a component of dietary supplements and nutrients among competetive athletes. Deficiency of vitamin D causes children growth inhibition, and rickets.
For adults - deficiency causes osteomalacia.
Excess
of vitamin D causes headaches, alopecia, nausea, drowsiness, blurred vision, pain in the long bones, the deposition of calcium deposits.
