Lexicon supplementation: Acetyl-L-carnitine

ALCAR - chemical formulation

Acetyl-L-Carnitine is one of the compounds that are used in sports supplementation to improve brain function, cognitive support, and concentration. However, as indicated by scientific reports, its effect also affects energy expenditure, which is linked to the effect on metabolism.

    The active substance

ALCAR or acetylated form of l-carnitine is a substance belonging to the vitamin-like group. As a derivative of l-carnitine occurs naturally in the human body, so it is a compound known to him. The human body is responsible for maintaining the appropriate ratio of acetyl CoA to CoA, which will be linked to the efficiency of the transport of fatty acids to the mitochondria.

    Action and biological role

As a more bioavailable version of l-carnitine, ALC is characterized by properties affecting the nervous system, which is related to the fact that it penetrates the blood-brain barrier. As mentioned in the characteristics of the active substance, it supports the transport of fatty acids, improving their utilization for energy needs. In addition, due to neuromodulatory effects, it affects the performance of the brain, which is related to the feeling of a better concentration of attention or an accelerated memorization.

The basic function of carnitine is transport of fat compounds inside mitochondria cells.

In addition, ALC provides protective support for the nervous system, which consists in securing against the formation of lipofuscin, which is a prescription for prolonging the life of cells. In addition, ALC replenishes fat burners as a supplement that improves the energy potentials of mitochondria, increasing the possibility of using more free fatty acids.

    Supplement description

ALC / ALCAR supplements are usually found in capsules, 100-300 mg per capsule. Powdered preparations are also available. However, the taste is less pleasant, intense and sour.

How to dose and what to combine it with?

ALC dosage is about 1000mg / day, which can be divided into 3 doses of 300mg per day. Supplements can be used around the workout period as a support for physical activity. To assist brain function, the supplement can be combined with other products that have neurostimulatory effects such as caffeine, tyrosine, bacopa monnieri, gotu kola, noopept. In order to reduce body fat it can be added to thermogenics such as Rocket Fuel Blue Edition at a dose of about 400mg, which will show greater thermogenic and lipolytic effects.

In addition to NAC, B5, zinc, Ashwagandha and Rhodiola Rosea could be highly synergistic in improving nervous system state.

I do not agree that: https://www.bergmueller.at/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/karlic_lohninger_nutrition_2004.pdf

As the article mentions, L-Carnitine has many mechanisms which could potentially lead to increased fat oxidation.

Due to increased interest in a vegan/vegetarian diet, an L-carnitine deficiency could be the result of that (it’s contained mainly in meat tissues). And in such case, L-Carnitine shows the highest efficiency.
