There are many plants that we use to improve health. Mumio is a health-promoting supplement that was also a plant...several hundred years ago. This specific substance is a resin-like biomass, formed through an extremely long process. It is very abundant in active substances, so it was readily used in the medicinal tradition. Today, Mumio is still used for human health, but is more often used in the form of extracts in capsules.
What is Himalayan Mumio?
Mumio is an extract, but not from a living plant. It is a type of substance that is formed over centuries from plant remains processed by microorganisms. The purified extract of Mumio that we find in dietary supplements is a complex consisting of, among other things, a mixture of minerals, but the main component is fulvic acid, of which there are usually 20 or 50%. In addition to fulvic acid, dibenzo α-pyrones are considered the most important ingredient.
Mumio supplement is customarily reached for mainly:
- optimizing testosterone,
- reducing the effects of stress,
- antioxidant action,
- general revitalizing and strengthening effects.
Himalayan mumio in Ayurveda is categorized as rasayana. This means that it was credited with rejuvenating and general wellness properties. Traditionally, it had a great many uses and was believed to contribute to the treatment of all diseases.
Mumio for male enhancement
This aspect attracts many interested parties. An increase in testosterone is an attractive vision for many men, and sometimes it is not easy to achieve. The market offers many supplements that theoretically have the ability to raise testosterone, but in practice only a few are worthy of attention. Mumio is one of them.
What sets Mumio apart? Most notably that its effect on testosterone boosting was documented in a good-quality clinical trial that was randomized, blinded and placebo-controlled.
Healthy volunteers between the ages of 45 and 55 were given either 250 mg of Mumio extract twice a day, or an equivalent placebo. The entire trial lasted 90 days. After this time, it was noted that Mumio induced an increase in total and free testosterone, as well as DHEA-S , compared to placebo. LH and FSH, the pituitary hormones that, among other things, control testicular cells, remained at the same level.
Another study looked at the effects of Mumio on spermatogenesis. The study involved men diagnosed with oligospermia. They were to take 100 mg of Mumio extract twice a day for 90 days. Twenty-eight patients out of sixty showed significant improvements in semen (+37.6%), total sperm count (+61.4%), sperm motility (12.4-17.4% after various intervals) and number of normal sperm (+18.9%). In addition, there was an increase in serum testosterone (+23.5%) and an increase in FSH (+9.4%).
Adaptogenic aspect of Mumio's effects
Both in the Ayurvedic tradition and in the literature, there are quite a few references to Mumio's effects on stress, with some even calling it an adaptogen.
Anti-stress and anti-anxiety effects have been noted in studies on rodents, among others, which gained significant improvements in immobility in the forced swim test (Porsolt's test) as a result of Mumio supplementation. In another rat study, Mumio was shown to counteract the behavioral symptoms of chronic fatigue by modulating the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis and mitochondrial bioenergetics.
Also noteworthy is the information on Mumio's effect on improving adaptation to the high-altitude environment, which is generally harsh for humans. Altitude problems can include: hypoxia, acute mountain sickness, altitude cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, insomnia, fatigue, lethargy, lack of appetite, body pain. Mumio's active ingredients are considered to help transport nutrients to the tissues, providing them with better nutrition and counteracting fatigue. After all, Shilajit is a Sanskrit word meaning "Conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness."
Mumio dosage
Effective dosages are in the range of 50-100 mg of fulvic acid taken twice a day. Depending on the concentration of the extract in the supplement, you need to choose the appropriate amount.
- Mumio extract 20%: 250 mg for 50 mg of fulvic acid or 500 mg for 100 mg of fulvic acid.
- Mumio 50% extract: 100 mg for 50 mg fulvic acid or 200 mg for 100 mg fulvic acid.
Taking it twice a day is a good practice, as fulvic acid is absorbed very well, but it is also eliminated from the system quite quickly and does not work around the clock.
