BCAA is a complex of amino acids, which are characterized by the content of a branched chain in a molecule. Leucine, isoleucine and valine belong to the compounds, which need to be provided to the organism with food.

Maintaining proper supply of branched chain amino acids stimulates anabolic processes of the organism and protects from exhaustion. In combination with the remaining protein amino acids they constitute “bricks”, which are used in the synthesis of new muscle proteins.

Supplementation with BCAA allows to reduce the feeling of fatigue after training. During tough training sessions, the organism utilizes branched chain amino acids as the source of energy, which decreases their level in blood. It is a factor, which stimulates the secretion of tryptophan to the brain, which is a substrate for the production of serotonin. Sudden increase of the concentration of this neurotransmitter in the brain causes the feeling of fatigue and sleepiness. For this reason, maintaining high level of BCAA immediately after workout allows to avoid excessive fatigue after training.

Leucine is considered the most important branched chain amino acid. In order to obtain maximal effects related to its activity, it needs to be provided at the amount which exceeds leucine threshold, which is ca. 2 g of this amino acid. It is an average value, as the threshold is an individual matter.

This amino acid is responsible for the activation of mTOR protein, which constitutes a complex of proteins taking part in cell signaling. First of all, the synthesis of muscle proteins is activated, thanks to which leucine promotes the development of muscle tissue. The activity of this kinase is strengthened during tough training sessions.

High doses of leucine influence anticatabolic effect. The amino acid on its own does not demonstrate such an effect, but its metabolites - HMB and HICA are the factors which reduce the breakdown of proteins during reduction. Among beginners, leucine decreases muscle soreness after tough training sessions.

There are some studies which indicate that proper intake of this amino acid may positively influence longevity. It results from the fact that with age the amount and effectiveness of mitochondria in the organism drop. They are the ingredients of cells, which are mainly responsible for energy production in the organism. Leucine stimulates SIRT proteins, which facilitate the work and improve lifespan of mitochondria.

Isoleucine is another amino acid, which belongs to the group of BCAA. Contrary to leucine, it does not have influence on mTOR kinase, therefore it does not promote the synthesis of proteins in the organism.

The main effect that this amino acid has is the facilitation of carbohydrate metabolism in the organism. Isoleucine, by activating phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and protein kinase C (PKT), stimulates the uptake of glucose by muscle cells. It ensures high energy level in the organism and saves its own muscle glycogen. Leucine does not have such an effect as it also influences the processes, which quieten this activity.

Despite increased glucose uptake during supplementation with isoleucine, this amino acid does not stimulate glycogen resynthesis and it does not increase insulin secretion.

Anticatabolic activity of isoleucine consists in inhibiting the process of glycogenesis, which transforms protein amino acids into glycogen.

Against these premises, it seems that valine is the amino acid which has the smallest influence on body composition. However, it may promote regeneration, as it is a glucogenic amino acid. It means that it may be used during training as a molecule converted to glycogen.
