Now Foods Cat's Claw is a dietary supplement with an extract of cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) inner bark.
Cat's claw (vilcacora) – a Peruvian herb, believed to have special healthy properties. It is native to the tropical Amazon jungle, mainly in Peru. It contains many bioactive compounds, i.e. oxindole alkaloids, procyanidins, triterpenes, oleanolic, ursolic and chinchoninic acids, β-sitosterol, catechins and chinchoninic acid glycosides. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiviral properties, supports the organism's immunity, detoxifies and stimulates the immune system.
Vilcacora's active substances (oxindole alkaloids) boost the organism's immunity by increasing the amount of phagocytes and inhibiting platelet aggregation (clumping). Phagocytes are the body's "hunter" cells capable of phagocytosis, that is devouring and digesting pathogenic microorganisms, the products of tissue decay and antigens.
In one of conducted tests, scientists evaluated the effect of cat's claw on immunity boost in patients after administering a pneumococcal vaccine for the purpose of preventing pneumonia. Administering the cat's claw extract caused a visible increase in the level of antibodies in blood serum as compared to placebo. Additionally, the boosted level of antibodies maintained even after 5 months since vaccination.
Vilcacora as support in Lyme disease treatment
Using antibiotics in Lyme disease treatment allows fighting Borrelia spirochetes; it does not, however, neutralise the toxins which they produce and which cause inflammations and, in turn, health deterioration (the so-called Herxheimer reaction). In that case, it is advised to use the cat's claw extract which, exhibiting properties similar to cholestyramine’s (a toxin-removing ion exchange resin), can help to remove bacterial neurotoxins.
Helpful in joint inflammations
One of scientific experiments which lasted 24 and 28 weeks, randomised with a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, demonstrated an improvement in the clinical condition of patients with RA (rheumatoid arthritis) after supplementation with the vilcacora extract. Scientists observed a reduction of inflammations, soreness, stiffness, as well as the value of the Ritchie index in patients.
Lethal for cancer under in vitro conditions
In conducted in vitro studies, cat's claw inhibited the proliferation of the human breast cancer cell lines (MCF7), induced apoptosis and strongly inhibited the proliferation of the human promyelocytic leukaemia cell lines (HL60) and the B-cell lymphoma line transformed with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
More leukocytes and lymphocytes
Further tests (this time on rats) confirmed vilcacora's efficiency in terms of increasing the number of leukocytes (white blood cells which participate in immune reactions) and the stimulation (in vitro) of lymphocyte proliferation. The growth of leucocytosis was confirmed by experiments on healthy volunteers.
The above-described properties mean that the plant can be potential helpful in conventional methods of cancer treatment (chemo- and radiotherapy), during which the number of leukocytes and immune functions fall significantly. Analogically, a reduced number of lymphocytes is observed in people infected with HIV. Studies have confirmed that cat's claw restores the normal number of lymphocytes in those people.
The power of antioxidants
The plant also contains a lot of antioxidants, that is compounds which neutralise the activity of free radicals, protecting healthy cells from their destructive influence. Uncaria tomentosa prevents the production of free radicals and lipid peroxidation, as well as inhibits the damage of sugar groups in the DNA caused by free radicals (under in vitro conditions).
To sum up, Now Foods Cat's Claw is a dietary supplement with extraordinary biological properties. It should be administered as an emergency agent, with common sense and preferably under the guidance of the specialist who controls the treatment. It is recommended for people with low immunity, inflammations and frequent infections.
It is recommended to take the product about 30 minutes before a meal, and use it for 2-4 weeks. For the improve the health take 1- 2 capsules a day. Uncaria tomentosa is also known as cat's claw. Cat's Claw (Uncaria Tomentos) is a herb mainly known for its antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, occurring naturally in the tropical forests of South and Central America. For therapeutic purposes, the bark and root of the plant are used.
Cat’s Claw helps to minimize the symptoms of arthritis (it reduces pain symptoms), demonstrates anticancer effect, optimizes blood pressure (effective in case of hypertension, antithrombotic activity), strengthens the immune system (helpful in case of HIV infection, effective in fighting herpes) and it is also effective in fighting a wide range of digestive disorders (irritable bowel syndrome, stomach and duodenum ulcers, bowel inflammation).
Cat’s Claw may also demonstrate effectiveness in case of borreliosis - it was proven in one of the studies that combining Cat’s Claw and Otoba parvifolia contributed to the destruction of Borrelia spirochetes both in relation to active and inactive forms.
