Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is naturally produced in the human body in very small quantities. We can find it also in some foods – mostly in broccoli, spinach and organ meats. It is a substance which reminds a vitamin. As well as vitamin C and E it is a powerful antioxidant and just like vitamin B is involved in the processing nutrients into energy.
It is a saturated fatty acid containing two sulfur atoms. Lipoic acid transport in the gut is quite fast (lower pH increases the absorbability), but it requires energy. Lipoic acid is widely used in the case of many dysfunctions of the body.
A positive effect of lipoic acid are documented in the treatment of diseases of pancreas, sight, hearing, bones (osteoporosis, bone regeneration), of auto-agressive diseases, in the treatment of cancer (it works protectively on human lymphocytes) and in the treatment of HIV (it increases lymphocystes activity and glutathione). It also has a beneficial effect in the fight against chronic neck, back and cross-section pain.
Well documented and described it also shows a beneficial effect of lipoic acid action in overweight, obesity and supporting weight loss.
