GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is one of the most important neurotransmitters acting as a nervous system activity inhibitor. The activation of GABA receptors is responsible for the anxiolytic, sedative, relaxing, regenerating and improving the quality of sleep action.
This neurotransmitter reduces a psychophysical tension, excitability, relaxes skeletal muscles, decreases the level of cortisol (stress hormone), increases the synthesis of growth hormone (GH), by which it indirectly operates anti-catabolic and regenerates.
The GABA-ergic neurotransmission increases, among other: alcohol and benzodiazepines, however, these substances lead to psychological and physical addcition, and have a number of side effects. But some natural substances are an alternative, like herbal extracts and vitamin-like compounds.
