Hepatica Cistus creticus is a dietary supplement in the composition of which there is the extract from the most precious variation of cistus (Cistus creticus), standardized for the content of polyphenols. Each capsule contains as much as 300 mg of the pure material.

The product is recommended to strengthen a natural protective barrier of the organism and improve immunity. Due to strong antimicrobial effect, it is an invaluable support in the fight with viral infections as well as parasitic and bacterial infections. High effectiveness in eliminating the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi from the organism allows to use the supplement in the therapy of Lyme disease and tick-borne coinfections. The abundance of polyphenols makes the preparation an ideal element of prophylaxis of diseases related to oxidative stress.

Cistus is a name used in relations to plants in the family Cistaceae. It involves 20 different species, which are minimally different in structure, chemical composition and the place of appearance.

Cistus creticus, also called grey-leaved cistus, appears mainly in the western part of the Mediterranean Basin. It is acknowledged as the most precious variation of cistus and exhibits the widest scope of pharmacological effects. The material used in phytotherapy is herb and leaves. In its extracts the presence of almost 50 compounds of polyphenol character (flavonols and flavonoids) was noted, which are responsible for antioxidant, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial effects.

Antioxidant effect
According to researchers, oxidative stress and disturbing the balance between the reactions of oxidation and reduction, leading to the creation of the excess of free radicals are the main causes of the majority of civilization diseases. Supplementing a diet with the sources of antioxidant in essential to maintain health.

Cistus creticus extracts, due to the large content of polyphenols, work perfectly in the prophylaxis of chronic diseases, such as diabetes type 2, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease. Polyphenols are one of the strongest antioxidants – they decrease the concentration of free radicals in the organism, inhibit the process of lipid peroxidation and have a protective influence on DNA.

Antimicrobial effect
Herb and leaves of cistus creticus exhibit incredibly wide spectrum of antimicrobial effects. They fight bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoans and yeasts.

In in vitro studies it was proven that cistus creticus extracts inhibit the spreading of the flu virus. As an inhibitor of neuraminidase, they prevent viruses from abandoning infected cells and inhibit their permeation to other cells. They also fight intestinal viruses as well as oral herpes viruses.

Cistus creticus is effective in relation to a large group of bacteria, both Gram-positive and Gram negative. It limits the growth of spirochetes responsible for Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, decreases the population causing stomach ulcers, Helicobacter pylori, destroys the strains of golden staph and eliminates the bacteria Escherichia coli.

Cistus creticus has antifungal effect. It even inhibits the development of these strains that managed to inure to the majority of synthetic antibiotics, i.e. Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Candida parapsilosis.

Cistus creticus has a deterrent effect on insects. It was proven that people taking cistus creticus extracts are less susceptible to the bites of mosquitos, sand flies, wasps and ticks. In many countries, the extracts from cistus creticus are included in a standard anti-tick prophylaxis in the occupational groups with increased risk (e.g. foresters).

The effect in the area of the immune system
Cistus creticus extracts are traditionally used to increase immunity. They regulate the immune response of the organism, modulate the growth and number of cells of the immune system. They stabilize the number of cytokines released by human lymphocytes. They normalize the concentration of inflammation mediators in the system in response to infection or injury. At the same time, the prevent spreading of inflammation and do not allow it to transmute in the chronic state.

Neurodegenerative diseases prophylaxis
Cistus creticus has neuroprotective effect. It minimizes the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases, especially Alzheimer’s disease. Among people who are already sick, cholinergic transmission is improved, thanks to which it may contribute to decreasing the characteristic symptoms (torpor, loss of memory, worse mental ability).

The compounds contained in the plant are the inhibitors of butyrylcholinesterase enzyme. In normal conditions, its activity is small, however, it quickly increases along with the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and death of cholinergic neurons. Inhibiting the expression of this enzyme is reflected in the increase of acetylcholine level in the brain and at the same time the improvement of cognitive functions.

Other pro-health properties
Cistus creticus inhibits the secretion of histamine, which is responsible for the majority of allergic reactions. It decreases such allergic reactions as watery eyes, sneezing, hay fever, hives.

Cistus creticus supports the circulatory system and may prevent atherosclerosis. Polyphenols contained in the plant tighten thin-walled blood vessels (the so-called capillaries).

Cistus creticus extracts are gentle inhibitors of the enzymes of alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase, therefore they may contribute to lowering sugar level in people with hyperglycemia.

Cistus creticus has a certain anticancer potential. In in vitro studies it was proven that the extracts from this plant limit the development of cellular cancers of cervix, melanoma and breast cancer.

Summing up, Cistus creticus is the best choice for people who want to naturally improve the organism’s immunity and minimize the risk of many diseases. The popularity of cistus is constantly increasing especially in the face of the increased number of instances of developing Lyme disease and tick-borne coinfections. We need to realize that not all supplements exhibit equal effectiveness. When reaching for them, it is worth making sure that they contain a standardized extract from the proper kind of cistus, as only this one guarantees proper strength and effectiveness of use.
