Diindolylmethan (DIM) – what is it?

Diindolylmethan (DIM) is a substance converted from indole-3-carbinol. Its name is associated with its structure, as it contains two indole groups attached to a methane group. DIM can be found in cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and brussels sprouts.

It is used in supplementation because of its anticancer potential and positive influence on estrogen metabolism. DIM can modify the paths of estrogen transformations, which results in improvement in proportion of 2-hydroxyestrone to 16a-hydroxyestrone, which has milder estrogen effect. Higher concentration of DIM affects AhR (aryl hydrocarbon receptor), which in turn affects activation of Natural Killer cells and increases production of interferon-gamma, which can hinder the growth of cancer cells. In turn, even low concentration of DIM increases activity of a gene repair enzyme (ATM) in response to the action of oxidative stressors, which can damage DNA molecules.
