Swanson Gotu Kola is a dietary supplement with an extract from the above-ground parts of centella (Centella asiatica), also commonly known as gotu kola.

Gotu kola (centella) - a medicinal plant from the group of adaptogens, that is the agents which increase stress resistance. It contains many bioactive substances: pentacyclic triterpene saponins, coumarines, asiaticosides, asiatic acid, glycosides and phenolic acids, phytosterols, madecassic acid, vitamins (A, C, E and K), alkaloids (hydrocotyline), glutamic acid, serine, alanine and magnesium.

Gotu kola has an adaptogenic and nootropic effect, it relaxes, improves the mood, sleep quality and memory, reduces stress, facilitates concentration, stimulates the synthesis of collagen and elastin, prevents wrinkles, protects the heart, modulates neurons, prevents depression, fights bacteria, fungi and neoplasms.

Effect on the nervous system
Centella asiatica affects the central nervous system in many ways. It reduces spontaneous activity, relaxes, induces calm, reduces anxiety, increases the length of sleep and limits involuntary movements.

Research has proven that it is as effective a relaxant as mild anxiolytics, such as diazepam. The difference lies in the details: gotu kola does not exhibit any adverse reactions. On the contrary – it is an adaptogen, it reduces stress sensitivity, supports the processes of learning, associating facts, concentrating and adapting to a new environment.

Positive effect on the circulatory system
Because of its effect on vascular and perivascular tissue, centella is applied in treating blood flow disorders, heart and blood vessel diseases. Triterpenes stimulate the synthesis of connective tissue proteins by modulating fibroblast activity in blood vessel walls, which contribute to the improvement of their tension and flexibility.

Moreover, thanks to its anti-aggregatory effect, the plant prevents venostasis and thrombosis. For that reason, it is recommended in the case of hypertension, post-thrombotic syndrome and any symptoms of venous insufficiency. It is particularly beneficial for people who work in only one position - standing or sitting - and for women with varicose veins symptoms.

Antimicrobial and antifungal effect
Gotu kola is characterised by an antimicrobial and antifungal effect on many pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The strongest effect can be observed against the bacteria Escherichia coli, whose excess causes gastrointestinal and urinary diseases, as well as against the mould fungi Aspergillus niger (black mould), which can cause an ear infection, pulmonary diseases and poisoning caused by mycotoxin production.

To sum up, Swanson Gotu Kola is a dietary supplement which constitutes an effective weapon against venous insufficiency and varicose veins, problems with concentration and memory, as well as help in the case excessive stress and nervous tension. It also proves useful in the cases of the lack of motivation for learning, depression, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, sports injuries, thrombosis, mycosis, psoriasis and bacterial infections.
