Biotin Biotin

Apollo's Hegemony Biotin is a dietary supplement containing the highest content of biotin available on the market -- up to 100 mg in a capsule. Currently, due to the lack of an effective medicine for MS, new therapeutic alternatives are being intensively sought for. Scientific studies proved that high doses of biotin slow down the disease progression and improve the degree of disability in MS patients. Tolerance of biotin’s higher doses by the patients was good and no adverse reactions were reported.

Higher doses of biotin support optimal energy production in neurons and astrocytes. Biotin activates carboxylases, which, amongst others, in cells of the nervous system participate in the synthesis of key substrates and intermediates in the Krebs cycle such as acetyl-CoA, succinyl-CoA, and oxaloacetic acid. The Krebs cycle (tricarboxylic acids cycle (TCA)) is a series of biochemical reactions leading to the formation of energy compounds necessary for proper energy metabolism of the brain.

One of the hypotheses explaining the reasons for the formation of a progressive form of MS is insufficient energy production by nervous system cells. This phenomenon is referred to as "virtual hypoxia" and means the reduced production of energy compounds by the mitochondria in the Krebs cycle while increasing the energy demand for demyelinating axons. Therefore, it is believed that higher doses of biotin may help to increase energy production in nervous system cells, avoiding the occurrence of "virtual hypoxia".

Biotin activates the carboxylase involved in the formation of myelin sheaths, whose function is to protect and isolate  the nerve fibers which are atrophied in the course of MS. Biotin is a coenzyme of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), an enzyme displaying an activity in brain tissue and playing an important role in the synthesis of myelin, malonyl-CoA and fatty acids. As an ACC activator, biotin can, therefore, be an element limiting the efficiency and speed of myelin synthesis processes. In addition, by affecting the Krebs cycle in oligodendrocytes, it promotes the increased production of citrate, necessary for the synthesis of lipids.

Some of the symptoms of biotin deficiency resemble MS symptoms. These include disorders of fats and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as disorders of protein synthesis. There may also be neurological disorders, muscle pain, tingling in limbs, increased cholesterol levels, and depression. In addition, due to the beneficial effects of biotin on the condition of the skin, hair, and nails, its deficiency may be manifested by hair loss, skin rashes, and inflammation.

Biotin affects the reduction of triglycerides and VLDL. Biotin may increase AMP-kinase (AMPK) activity, leading to, amongst other, inhibition of lipogenesis processes in adipocytes, triglycerides and cholesterol synthesis, while promoting fatty acid oxidation and glucose uptake. The studies carried out on animals and humans confirmed the effect of biotin supplementation on the reduction of triglycerides and VLDL levels in the blood. Normalization of the lipid profile is extremely important for cardiovascular health and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis.
