Swanson Zinc Carnosine PepZin GI is a product which combines L-carnosine and zinc for complete gastrointestinal protection and support. The supplement provides 8 mg of zinc and 29.5 mg of L-carnosine per serving. They restore balance, protects the gastrointestinal mucosa and improves its function.

In addition, this formulation brings many health benefits because zinc and L-carnosine influence positively not only the digestive system but also other systems and organs in our body.

Gastrointestinal protection and support
The PepZin Gl complex contains L-carnosine and zinc which have protective effects on the gastrointestinal tract. This complex strengthens and protects the gastronintestinal mucosa (mainly in the stomach and intestines) to prevent damage and discomfort.

This complex is a perfect chelator. It may bind heavy metals, thereby preventing their gastrointestinal absorption and promoting excretion. These metals are found usually in some foods in small amounts. However, they are sometimes the cause of digestive discomfort or even poisoning.

Carnosine protects also intestinal villi which may be damaged due to some drugs or inflammation, leading to impaired intestinal absorption and causing vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

This complex reduces also the production of proinflammatory cytokines in the stomach which may the source of digestive discomfort and constipation. It relieves unpleasant symptoms of infections with Helicobacter pylori, which are bacteria residing in the stomach.

Zinc belongs to trace elements, i.e. which are needed in small quantities for the organism but are critical to normal functioning of the body. Zinc is found mainly in bones, skeletal muscles and also the liver, kidneys and erythrocytes. Its principal dietary source is meat, liver, poultry and nuts.

Apart from it beneficial impact on the digestive system, zinc has numerous functions in our body, including:
It is critical to enzyme function.
Zinc is required for the functioning of about 300 enzymes and nearly 1000 transcription factors (proteins involved in the transcription of DNA into RNA). Because of that, it is found in all classes of enzymes and is the second most abundant trace element after ion in our body.

It takes part in important cellular processes.
It is impossible to describe all cellular processes in which zinc is involved. The key processes for cell function include: nucleic acid metabolism, signal transduction (intercellular communication and triggering an intracellular response) and protein biosynthesis. Zinc helps also regulate apoptosis, namely programmed cell death which protects, among others, against carcinogenesis.

It promotes healthy function of the nervous system.
In the nervous system, zinc affects neuronal excitability, synaptic plasticity and hence the process of learning. Abnormal zinc metabolism disrupts many mechanisms which support a healthy nervous system. By acting via many enzymes, zinc works also with neurons and promotes neurotransmission. However, zinc imbalance (e.g. its excess), especially in the nervous system may be toxic.

It is involved in intracellular signal transduction.
Zinc is a messenger which may activate different cellular pathways. This consists in binding of zinc with a given receptor which produces specific intracellular reactions, e.g. synthesis of proteins (hormones, enzymes). Salivary gland, prostate and immune cells use zinc for communicating with other cells.

L-carnosine is a dipeptide comprised of beta alanine and histidine. Carnosine is found in the greatest amounts in our muscles, hence its name (like carnitine) – from the Latin word carn, meaning “flesh”.

As a natural component of muscles, carnosine has many vital functions. Because of that, its supplementation may bring measurable benefits. Among others, it promotes muscle growth by stimulating the contraction of muscle fibres and promoting their regeneration.

In addition, L-carnosine shows antioxidant properties. It may protect cells from negative effects of free radicals and help the body remove harmful metabolic products. It is also important, especially for the digestive system, that carnosine has the ability to chelate, i.e. bind to ions of heavy metals which are often found in food.

To sum up, Swanson Zinc Carnosine PepZin Gl is a dietary supplement which promotes healthy gastrointestinal function, influencing beneficially especially gastrointestinal mucosa. In addition, zinc and L-carnosine provide complete support for the body and thus allows you to enjoy good health.
