In recent years, the growing interest of consumers is focusing on unprocessed foods without chemical additives and on organic products rich in bioactive components. To meet the constantly growing demands, scientists find new sources of ingredients of health promoting properties. One of them are acerola cherries, which are commonly used in phytotherapy.
Acerola cherries (Malpighia glabra L.) come from the Canary Islands, but grow also in Central America and in the areas of the Amazon River. Native inhabitants of these regions use them mainly to support the immune system as well as to delay ageing processes and prevent age-related diseases. The acerola cherries and its derivatives are safe and can be applied to both adults and children. In traditional medicine, they have been used to treat chicken pox, anemia, diseases of lungs and liver and to prevent the symptoms of common cold. The described health promoting properties result from the high content of vitamins, antioxidants and other bioactive components. Thanks to that acerola is commonly used in the production of enriched foods or dietary supplements.
Acerola extract is rich in antioxidants which neutralize free radicals. This fruit is characterized by a high content of carotenoids and polyphenols. In its juice there are 17 different carotenoids, with the overwhelming amount of β-carotene. Depending on cultivation of plant, the presence of different anthocyanins was observed. Antioxidant activity of acerola juice is among the best of all sources of antioxidants. What is interesting, cherries or extracts of acerola alleviate the negative effects of inhaling cigarette smoke, because it reduces the strength of the oxidative stress in smokers.
Acerola belongs to the fruits that are the richest in ascorbic acid and it is estimated that 100 g of the fruit contains 1,000 to 4,500 mg of this compound. This is the most valuable component of this fruit, and the literature suggests that acerola contains 90 times more vitamin C than oranges. Moreover, acerola cherries contain iron, phosphorus and calcium as well as vitamins E, A and B (B1, B2 and B3).
Vitamin C supports the maintenance of the proper functioning of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise. It helps in the production of collagen in order to ensure the proper functioning of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin and teeth. Moreover, ascorbic acid contributes to the maintenance of the proper energy metabolism, supports the functioning of the nervous system and maintaining mental functions, contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, supports regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E and increases the absorption of iron.
Vitamin C deficiency symptoms are bleeding and ulceration of gums, tooth loss, brittle and cracking blood vessels, weakening of the immune system, improper healing of broken bones and slow wound healing. Moreover, people providing too small amounts of ascorbic acid complain about swollen and painful joints. Vitamin C deficiency is often visible among smokers as characteristic numerous minor wrinkles on their skin. You should be aware that the content of vitamin C in the diet declines under the influence of heat treatment and long storage, so it is important to enrich your diet with supplements containing natural sources of this ingredient.
Additional properties of acerola
Bioflavonoids together with vitamin C enhance their beneficial effects, which causes that acerola supports maintaining good health and prevents of ageing processes. Applying the acerola extracts affects the improvement of the appearance and health of skin, positively influences eyes and supports functioning of the cardiovascular system (it helps to lower blood pressure which leads to the expansion of blood vessels).
To sum it all up, Hepatica Bio Acerola is a dietary supplement which, because of the very wide range of properties, is an important element of preventive healthcare. The supplementation with the preparation will also be beneficial for people exposed to vitamin C deficiencies, in particular, smokers, athletes and people consuming very small amounts of fruits and vegetables.
If we suspect that we have vitamin C deficits or we conclude that our intake of this element in a diet is too low, we may increase the dose to 2-3 tablets a day.
If we take a higher dose than recommended, the portions should be divided and taken at even time intervals.
